Virgin Mary stained glass window

This is Father Dave’s favorite stained glass window, and I’m quite fond of it as well. It shows the Annunciation, in which the Virgin Mary accepts the message from the Archangel Gabriel, as described in Luke 1:38. Below it is the Latin Vulgate text Ecce ancilla Domini: fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum. For some reason, Father Dave finds it significant that one of the words can also be interpreted as an ordinal number; although that is indeed its primary meaning, that’s not the intended meaning in the verse from Luke because here it is generally taken to mean “favorable” or “agreeable.” Also, in this text, the word ancilla is commonly translated as “handmaid,” though it more broadly means a helper and is therefore related to the English word “ancillary.”
